What are the most common mistakes in dog training?

People have the best of intentions in the world when it comes to training their dogs.  They see dog trainers on TV or read about dog training on the Internet and it sounds so easy.

So, what is going wrong?  What are the most common dog training mistakes?

Some of the things that happen to sabotage your efforts to train your dog to happen before you put a leash on your dog.

Many dogs have behavioral and training problems because they are not receiving enough exercise.  Your dog may not be able to focus on anything you're trying to teach him because he's stuck at home all day and just wants to play.  Before you attempt to do any training with your dog, make sure he has plenty of time to burn off some of his energy, especially if he is a puppy or small dog.

Staying indoors all day without enough exercise is also one of the main reasons dogs develop behavioral problems.  Many dogs become destructive due to boredom.  Remember that your dog will be less likely to destroy your home if he gets some good exercise every day.  You should also make sure he has plenty of his stuff to chew on.  It's much cheaper to exchange $5 dog toys than a $1000 sofa.

Also contributing to the increased activity of dogs is the food that many people feed their dog friends.  Many foods today contain very high levels of protein.  Some of these foods are designed for canine athletes, such as sleds or racing greyhounds.  Before you buy protein-rich food for your dog, you should consider whether this food is suitable for your dog and its activity levels.  If your dog is a sofa potato, he probably doesn't need to eat as much as he would if he was running an Iditarod.  If you feed your dog's such high levels of protein, they should be able to use that energy.  Otherwise, you will increase your dog's energy level - more behavior and training problems.

Once you have thought about your dog's exercise and diet, you should think about your dog's overall socialization.  It is easier to train good social dogs.  Try to get your dog out of a place where he can meet other people and dogs.  Your dog needs to know how to interact normally with others.  Make sure you don't mistakenly reward bad behavior.  You don't want to try to calm a puppy when he's scared.  Nothing will help convince him faster that there is something to be afraid of.  Don't pet dogs when they've done something bad, no matter how nice.  You don't want to pet a dog that jumps on you, for example.  Teach your dog good manners with other dogs and with people.

When you train at home, many problems occur due to poor timing.  Your timing can be off when it comes to giving praise, rewards, or corrections.  It is always best to do things as soon as your dog has done something so he can connect.  Even clicking the clicker at the wrong time can give your dog false information.  Although the training should be fun, you should try to stay focused.  Make sure you click and treat or praise what you intend.  Consistency and timing are very important or your dog may be confused.

If you and your dog are going through a poor training session, it's important to hear it before you get aggravated or lose your temper.  People sometimes make the mistake of trying to get their dog to do something else right, but they insist on trying to learn the new lesson.  It's much better to take a step back and let your dog finish the lesson by doing something you know he already knows well.  Reward him for doing something easy that he knows.  This way you can leave the lesson feeling better and without anger.  You can have a better lesson next time when both of you are clearer.

Trying to train when you are upset or angry is a bad mistake and very counterproductive with dogs.  They will pick up on your feelings and react poorly to them.  They will most likely be unable to focus and will likely do lessons poorly, which in turn will make your mood worse.  Save training for the time when you are in a calm and good mood.  It should be an enjoyable experience with your dog.  When you are calm and happy, your dog will pick up on that mood and be happy to learn.

Don't try to do too much too quickly with your dog.  Dogs learn best in small steps.  You can teach a dog complicated things to do but you have to teach each little step individually.  take your time.  Your dog may get sick very quickly, but don't skip the steps.

Do not forget to praise and reward generously.  Partnership training.  Show your dog that you appreciate him.

Remember that when your dog does not learn what you want to teach him, it is often the fault of the trainer.  Don't blame the dog.  Consider how you're trying to communicate and try something different.
